Why It Matters

Why a Proper Skim Matters

A good skim is the difference between walls that look freshly built and walls that show every bump under the paint. We take the time to prep, fill and float so the final coat is dead flat.

Fresh plaster needs the right drying time before decorating — we'll advise on exactly when it's ready and how to mist-coat it for the best result.

Plastering & Skimming FAQs

Can you skim over Artex or a textured ceiling?
Yes — if the Artex is sound we skim straight over it for a flat, modern ceiling; if it's loose or very heavy we overboard first. We never sand old Artex (pre-2000 coatings can contain asbestos), so it's handled safely either way.
How long before I can paint new plaster?
Usually 5–7 days for a skim — it needs to dry from dark patches to an even pale pink. The first coat should be a watered-down 'mist coat' so the paint bonds properly instead of peeling.
Should I re-skim or fully replaster?
If the old plaster is firmly bonded, a re-skim is cheaper and gives a flawless finish. If it sounds hollow, has blown, or is damp-damaged, it needs hacking off and replastering — we tap-test and give you the honest answer at the quote.
How much mess and disruption is there?
Plastering is wet but fast — a single room is often done in a day. We dust-sheet floors, mask sockets and skirting, and clear up as we go, so you get a clean room back, not a building site.
Do you do coving and cornice as well?
Yes — we fit plaster and lightweight coving and run traditional cornice to finish a room off; take a look at our Coving & Cornice service.
